As a graphic designer, I use my art to inspire and provoke change. I am presenting a new action based campaign called Guide to Liberation. The project aims to aggregate rules and actions for freeing ourselves from exploitation and oppression in order to grow our communities. Submissions will be gathered online and thru postcards. Discourse and review by the community will be web-based. My goal will be to turn these guides and rules into graphic images in order to produce a series of thought provoking t-shirts along with a small art publication of the Guidebook to share within our communities.

Listen to Huey

If you are walking down the block and someone asks, “Who is Huey,” then 1Soul MVMT has fulfilled its mission “provoke change.” Huey P. Newton was the founder and intellectual engine of the Black Panther Party (BPP). The BPP is widely known for their militant language and gun-toting aesthetic. They are less known for creating models of community-building which countless non-profit organizations follow in today, including the Breakfast for Children Program which provided free hot meals to school-children.

In Huey’s autobiography Revolutionary Suicide, he says “I AM WE,” capturing his philosophy for community-building. Huey P. Newton was a true revolutionary, always challenging fear and hate with courage and love. In his words, “I will fight until I die, however that may come. But whether I’m around or not to see it happen, I know that the transformation of society inevitably will manifest the true meaning of ‘all power to the people.’”

Grow Community First

Rule# 001 “Grow Community First” is the first rule for any entrepreneur, activist or MVMT-maker. Protests, Philosophies and Products grow naturally from a group of people who intentionally gather for a purpose greater then any one individual. It is in community where we find ourselves reflected and discover our unique contributions to this world.

Rule# 001 “Grow Community First” is an invitation for other MVMT-makers to create the other 999 rules. It proposes a horizontal model of leadership where no group or individual is the rule-maker. This partnership-centered form of mvmt-building is the first principle in creating sustainability.

So I’m getting ready to launch a new project called “1SOUL Guide to Liberation”. Its a series of t-shirt designs with theme of a revolutionary guidebook. So the designs include “Rules” and “How Tos” for starting your own riot a.k.a revolution. The series is pretty open to continue down the line which I like, and its also open to collaborations. One of the T-shirts is a collab with BORish from Trust Your Struggle.

I guess my goal with this Series is to provoke a rebellious nature in people again. To be prepared, and to always have revolution as an option. I got alot influence on this one reading “The Black Power Revolt” , the Emory Douglas Exhibit and MVMTs like The Black Panthers, Young Lords, H.I.J.O.S.

We will be releasing the lookbook & some dope Training Videos made by my brother Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi next week. So in the meantime, heres a little Behind the Scenes footage from our shoot a week ago that I thew together for ya’ll. Let me know what ya’ll think!
